Carmel By the Sea | Dog Diaries Part 2

Scottish Deerhounds | Carmel By The Sea

When we left off last time, I was on  Carmel Beach in Northern California have a dog-gone-great-day!  With views like this on a morning stroll, you really can’t wish for anything more.  Maybe except a really cool beach birthday.

On our way down to the beach we met 3 couples who all had Scottish Deerhounds.  Scottish Deerhounds  are a cross between a creature from Spielberg’s Jurassic Park and a really good Warewolf movie.  All three from the same litter.  Brothers and sister.

3 Irish Wolfhounds’ 1st Birthday

They were celebrating their first birthday.  This was my first experience with Scottish Deerhounds and I was blown away by their size, agility and playfulness.  They were part formula one race cars, part kangaroo.

The Scottish Deerhound one of the tallest sighthounds in the world!  The Scottish Deerhound is gentle and extremely friendly.  Despite its size it is is extremely graceful, and is known as a galloping hound.

To get an idea of the size of these Scottish Deerhounds, check out their proportion next to an Italian Greyhound.
Brother and Sister “playing” with each other.  They are not fierce at all just super playful.
Their tails remind me of  prehensile monkey tails.
All three of the Scottish Deerhounds were serious surf dogs, no hesitation when it came to running straight into the ocean.
In addition to being the tallest breeds of dogs they are also extremely lean.
Probably my favorite portrait of the day.  I love the “S” curve that the kelp root makes and the way the sun lights up Katie’s brown eyes.
Jasper (below) looking all fashionable.
I could barely track these guys with my telephoto lens.  They’d take off like a rocket, by them selves.  No one is throwing a ball or stick for them.  They’re just playing in the sand with each other.
Any guess who’s going to win this race?
Lovely tails.
P.S. If you’re looking for some great info on where to stay in Carmel By the Sea, and want to get a great feel what I saw when traveling through Big Sur and Carmel check out my story here.
